Fashion Tower stands out among the many buildings in a neighborhood that was once the epicenter of American clothing design and manufacturing. This restoration and renovation project included building a contemporary lobby inspired by the rebirth of the Fashion District and the building’s unique heritage. Rugo Stone performed this project in collaboration with Walker Zanger, NY.
Rugo Stone was top of mind for the team at Walker Zanger when it came to fabricating the marble for the complex design in the lobby. This unique lobby design features “pleated” walls in hand-selected, fine veined Calacatta Caldia marble, with hints of bronze-tinted aluminum between each marble pleat. First, the Rugo Stone team prepared detailed shop drawings and digital slab layouts to locate the saw cuts on the slabs, ensuring perfect vein matching from panel to panel. Using these layout drawings, Rugo then cut the panels on a waterjet machine to precisely cut the unique triangular and quadrilateral shapes. Then using a CNC machine, Rugo milled the edges to create custom angle cuts, which formed the pleated design. The team dry-assembled each marble panel on plywood to mock up the installation conditions as a final QC check. For this, Rugo built special crates based on the sizes of the pieces, carefully packed and sent to the final installation. The final result is an elegant design with perfect vein matching.
